Female Suicide Bombers Kill 13 In Chibok
Three out of five
female suicide bombers yesterday detonated themselves and killed at least 10
persons in Chibok, the town where Boko Haram gunmen abducted over 300
schoolgirls about two years ago.
The female
insurgents kitted with explosives hidden under their gowns entered Chibok town
at about 1:30pm according to local sources. Three of them were eventually able
to detonate the bombs, which also injured 30 others.
A hospital source
that spoke to our reporter under the condition of anonymity because he was not
authorized to speak with the media said, “so far we have received 13 dead
bodies, of which three were the female suicide bombers, while 10 others were
those of innocent persons killed in the bomb blast.”
The source said the
facility at the hospital has since been overstretched because of the huge
number of injured persons.
“We have about 30
injured persons that have been brought in so far. We have our limitation here
and we are fast running out of medication here. There could be more casualties
and we badly need more medication here”.
Emmanuel Cosmos, a
resident of Chibok who also spoke on phone said he had just left the town for
the nearby town, Gombe, when his wife called him to inform him about the blast.
Cosmos, a teacher
in Chibok said his wife who was lucky to have survived saw two of the women who
detonated themselves at the crowded commercial area.
He said: “I just
got a call from my wife who informed me that five of my family members were
affected, but she was not sure how many of them got killed in the blast because
soldiers would not want residents to get close to the hospital as a general
search is currently going on for the two other female bombers seen earlier
together with the three that detonated themselves. They are still at large,’’
Where most of the
casualties were recorded. The third suicide bomber, who was targeting a
military checkpoint near Wumtaku Street, did not record much success because
only a soldier was injured there.
Since the abduction
of over 300 schoolgirls on the April 14, 2014, Chibok has suffered several
attacks by Boko Haram insurgents.
Though some of the
girls were able to escape while they were being flocked away by the gun 219 of
them are still missing.
