Kachikwu, the minister of state for petroleum resources made some shocking
discoveries in Lagos state on Monday, January 25.
The
minister, who was on a tour of the country, to assess the pipeline network
across the states uncovered a massive oil bunkering depot at Roberts Island, a
village off Lagos waters near Atlas Cove, Channels TV reports.

The village
was said to have practically set up a distribution hub for petrol by
perforating the pipelines.
Kachikwu
who could not hide his disappointment said: “I must say that I was very
disillusion to find this discovery but much as I was happy that it was found,
it just took a lot of wind off my sail in the sense of what next and who knows
how many more have not been discovered.
“At the end of the day, the responsibility for protecting the
assets of Nigerians must lie in the hands of Nigerians.
“There is no magic that I have that I am going to be able to
deliver zero incident environment, given the number of attacks we are getting
everywhere but at the end of the day, communities like these ones must begin to
rise up and say this is just not right.”
At the
location, hundreds of jerry cans and work tools used in perforating pipelines
and siphoning products were discovered buried under the sand.
The
minister disclosed that repair work would soon resume on the nation’s
refineries which were forced shutdown by militants’ activities.
A week ago, the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was forced to close the Port Harcourt, Warri and
Kaduna refineries following the attack on some oil and gas
pipelines by militants.
Reacting to the renewed bombings of oil and gas pipelines in the
Niger Delta area of the country by suspected militants, the Senate told the
Federal Government to take necessary measures to safe guard the
pipelines in the interest of the country.
