Anti-corruption war: Groups Issues Warning To Politicians


A group known as the Coalition of Civil Societies for Change has urged politicians to desist from witch-hunting others who disagree with them under the guise of waging a war on corruption. Leadership reports that the coordinator of the group, Olu Nojeem, speaking to the media in Lagos yesterday, February 26, pointed out that many politicians were now hiding under Buhari-led administration’s war against corruption to and make life miserable for as many who disagree with them He said: “Political godfathers now use the war against corruption as an excuse to make life unbearable for their former political godson’s and all who disagree with them.” He referred to an instance of a former governor in the north-east who has declared war on his former godson using the social media and the regular media as his arsenal. Nojeem explained that in in order actualize his purpose of bringing down the hitherto loyal godson, the godfather has amassed huge amount of money running into hundreds of millions of naira to fund a smear campaigns in the new media against his godson who happens to be one of those who were recently relieved as head of federal agencies. He said the aim of the smear campaigns aim by godfather who is equally standing trial for financial impriopriety is to draw the attention of the anti-graft agencies to the godson through sponsoring negative public image. Nojeem described such developments as destructive to the growing democracy of the country. Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Nigerian government of plans to arrest some of its notable leaders. A statement signed by the party’s national legal adviser, Victor Kwon, said the PDP is aware that the federal government has perfected plans to arrest the senator representing Akwa Ibom North West (Ikot Ekpene) senatorial district, Godswill Akpabio, the deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu and other leaders of the party on “imaginary charges”. In another development, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has dismissed a claim that the on-going anti-graft war was targeted at decimating the leadership of the opposition. He queried the rationale behind the allegation against the APC since those being interrogated were being given the opportunity to clear their names.
