Mr
Christian Ezeamaku, the Principal, Comprehensive Secondary School , Nawfia,
near Onitsha in Anambra, has called for the recruitment of more teachers to
replace retired and retiring teachers in the state.
Ezeamaku
made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at Nawfia
on Thursday.
He
expressed concern over the inadequate number of teachers in the state’s
education system, saying that it posed a serious challenge to academic
excellence in the state.
According
to him, it is better to have a drought of students than teachers in any school.
“All
schools in the state are affected by the current shortage of teachers.
“The
gaps were created following the mandatory retirement for all civil servants and
teachers in the state when due.”
He,
however, lauded students’ performance in major competitions, noting
particularly the success of Team Anambra in the 2014 Presidential Junior Debate
in Abuja, where it took the first position in 2015.
“In
Abeokuta, they repeated the feat, and in January 2016, they bagged first
position in a mock debate in Singapore, where 18 countries participated in the
preparation for the contest in Germany this year,” Ezeamaku said.
The
principal also observed that in 2015, the Commissioner for Education, Professor
Kate Omenugha won the best commissioner award in the state.
He
commended Gov. Willie Obiano’s development strides in the education sector
within two years in the areas of infrastructure and welfare of students and
teachers.
“I
want to thank the governor for donating N1 million each to all schools in the
state for sports development and sick bay facilities.
“Obiano
has been giving education a pride of place, financing it adequately to occasion
results from students within two years of his administration,” he said. (NAN)
