There are fears that one of the school’s students died in the face-off between male students of the institution.
The
violence has also led to the suspension of the semester examination, which
ought to have ended on Friday for most of the students.
As at press time on Monday, all the students were still locked up in their hostels, with security agents, especially riot policemen, swarming all over the school.
It was gathered that the build-up to the violence started on Tuesday when two male students engaged themselves over payment for marijuana bought from one another.
It was learnt that the two students stay in different hostels.
While one stays in Engineering Hostel, popularly called Old Girls Hostel, the other resides in Law/Sciences Hostel, called Boys Hostel 1.
The buyer of the marijuana was said to have deposited his phone as collateral until when he is able to pay.
But despite not having the money to pay for the weed, he was said to have demanded for the phone, which led to a squabble, with one of them slapping the other.
This developed into a fight between “boy” of both hostels, 70 per cent of whom are said to belong to the marijuana smoking club.
The female students too were not left out, with those in the marijuana smoking club taking sides.
It was the face-off during the week that snowballed into a major fight on Sunday, with both sides destroying any property in sight.
No fewer than four vehicles were said to have been destroyed.
A student was alleged to have died in the process, though this could not be independently confirmed.
When the move by the management of the school to stop the fight and wanton destruction of properties failed, security agents were invited in.
At about 10 pm, several canisters of teargas were fired into the school.
The students, who were supposed to continue with their semester examination have since been restricted to their rooms, with only security agents patrolling the school.
Efforts to get official confirmation on the development did not yield fruits as at press time.
