  • Stress: Are you worried about something? Did something happen that troubled you? Your stress levels affect your hormones, so your period might be late if you’re really anxious about something.
  • Travel: Changing your environment has a great effect on your menstrual cycle. So if you’re going on a vacation or you just came back from a trip abroad, don’t expect your period to be on time.
  • Illness: Even if it’s just a little cough, any short-term or long-term illness can cause your period to be delayed.
  • Changing your schedule: A sudden change in your routine will throw your body off guard. Your metabolism needs to get used to your new schedule.
  • Medication: Taking new medication or changing your daily intake is one of the major causes of late period.
  • Weight gain or weight loss: Even if you got accustomed to your weight gain (or loss), your menstrual cycle needs some time to adjust.
  • Excessive exercise: Exercising is good, but overdoing it might result in a menstrual delay.
  • Eating disorders:Obesity, bulimia and anorexia are serious eating disorders that might stop your period altogether.
  • Illegal drug use:The use of illegal drugs may have a very negative effect on your fertility. Late periods are just the tip of the iceberg.
  • Medical conditions: Polycystic ovary symptom, Thyroid irregularity, chronic diseases…there’s a very long list of diseases that can cause period disturbance.
  • Miscalculation: You might just have counted wrong. Check again!
  • Pregnancy:Number 1 cause of late (and missed) period. If you think you could be pregnant, act as if you really were. And get a pregnancy test as soon as you can.
  • Peri-Menopause:This is the transition phase between the reproductive and non-reproductive age. Your period will be acting all weird before the big switch. Peri-menopause is quite rare before the age of 40, and often comes with other symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness.

In case of recurrent lag in your period, don’t hesitate to get a professional opinion. Ask your physician about your symptoms.
