This article is written for busy entrepreneurs who want to improve writing skills with minimum effort. In this series of articles, I am going to focus on content marketing and web copy. You’ll find short and quick tips to improve your marketing campaigns so let’s get started.
Tip # 1: Do Your Research
To write killer web copy, you need three ingredients:
  1. Know your objective.
  2. Who are your customers?
  3. What does that person need?
Research is an important part of copy-writing. If you do not know your audience, you cannot connect with them. Do not fake the relationship. Make it real. The world’s greatest copywriters cannot succeed without research, your business won’t be an exception to this rule.
Tip #2: Long Copy Vs. Short Copy
You do not ask a salesperson to close the deal in less than 1000 words. It is not possible. Each customer is different. The salesperson must get the deal whether it takes a 2-hour discussion or a 5-minute conversation.
The debate for long or short copy is no exception. As a marketer, only you know which length will work, but testing different methods to understand your audience is a good idea.
Tip #3: Important Things First
Web copy is different than the traditional advertisement. People do not read the content. They’ll skim the information. It is important to emphasize important sections with highlighters. People read content in this format:
The content is scanned from “top to bottom” and then from left to right. The next line is scanned, and the reader decides whether to continue or not. The important tip must be written in the very first line or in a vertical order to grab attention.
Write readable content. Use bullet points, headings, sub-headings, and visuals to make it more appealing.
Tip #4: Focus on the benefit
What is in it for me? Do not describe product features. Describe the direct benefit. Dig deeper into the customer’s perspective. Define the ideal solution.
Tip #5: The Most Important 3-Word Letter “YOU.”
Advertising gurus ask to spell the brand name quite a few times. While it is a good practice, it can be irritating to your customer. Do not focus on your brand. Focus on your customer. Put the camera on your customers life. Understand their issues. Solve a problem and guide them toward your product.
Tip #6: Write in a Conversational Tone
The Internet is not a literature class. Do not ignore English grammar, but do not write confusing sentences. Write in a conversational tone. Using contractions is okay. Tweak the words and break some grammar rules. Make it user-friendlier.
Rule: The copy is good if a 6th-grade student can understand your message.
Tip #7: Write a clear “call-to-action.”
The sole purpose of an advertisement is to make sales. More often writers create entertaining copy that has nothing to do with money. Never do that. Copy-writing is all about selling a product or a service. You must close the deal.
End the copy with a compelling “call-to-action”. More on that in a later article.
